What I do

My name is David. I direct films and support projects with 3D layout & lighting and live-action color grading. My journey began in live-action cinematography, but for several years now, I’ve been working in the world of 3D animation. This mix creates unconventional and innovative styles. Rooted in my cinematography background, my strengths are in creative layout and lighting. I absolutely love designing virtual cinematography. As a colorist, I bring vibrant and modern looks to life. When directing my own short films, I draw inspiration from the rich history of animation (which I'm in love with).

I offer tailored creative layout, lighting, and grading.

Give me a call to discuss your needs!

3D Portfolio

In animation, we create create the impossible, but we trigger real emotions. Our tools may be virtual, but our stories are real. That's what keeps me going: Telling stories this world needs to see and experience. I create 3D for animated films, live-action films, commercials and art projects. Here, I give you an overview of some of the projects I worked on over the years.

Color Grading

I favor quick results, and this is what you get in Color Grading. The pressure is on, it's the last step of the creative image manipulation, I'm in the room with a director or cinematographer and we go through all the 1400 shots of a film in a few days. Color Grading gives you a ton of what a colleague once called "Bildglück": It describes the moment when you realise that this image that you're manipulating has just reached the sweet spot. Dopamine kicks when Bildglück happens. I want Bildglück all the time. If you want me to join your project in color grading, don't hesitate to ask!

My Background

Having worked on over 70 productions, I did several jobs on film sets like director of photography, 1st assistant camera, camera operator, lighting technician and grip. I also worked in post-production in editing, color grading and VFX. After finishing my filmmaking bachelor, I started working on fulldome films, large-scale projection mappings, art exhibitions, VR experiences and small games, as well as freelancing as a 3D generalist for automotive commercials. This is when I directed my first animated short film. I grew curious about if the 3D animation industry needed my cinematography skills for animation production: And it did! I picked up work as a layout artist and later as a lighting artist. Besides, I finished a 3D animation master, learning a ton about animation and its rich history; researching about animated documentaries for my masters thesis and directing my second short film.

I'm also interested in science. Here, you can have a look at my scientific work about live-action cameras and animated documentary films:

Team Player

Filmmaking is a collective effort. I love the feeling of working towards a common goal. The best times of a production are when everyone feels like they're needed. In 3D, you look left and right and see how all the parts of the story are coming together. Every evening after work, you're curiously checking what all the other artists have put together again. Or in color grading, you sit in a room with the director or cinematographer, tirelessly working through dozens or hundreds of shots, and in the end of the day, you proudly give a high-five about what you managed to pull together. The team feeling is a key motivation to me. So if you're looking to build a highly collaborative team, give me a call - I'll be glad to join!

Personal Art

While I'm not an active DP anymore, I still want to share what I worked on as a cinematographer. And to confirm the prejudice, I cherish photography as well - have a look at my gallery. You'll find analogue and digital photographs mixed. If you're like me, you'll find taking a look at an artist's full range useful in order to see if somebody fits the team.
